Edgeland Chronicles by me (Ed Tyler)

I have published a book about bioregionalism: not an academic thesis but a fictional fantasy set in the mid-21st Century and featuring the people living in the archipelago off the NW coast of Europe, which, in 2023, consists of the nations of Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and England. Fast forward to mid-century and the map looks a bit different.

Follow the fortunes of Breej, citizen of Hebridean Eastatlantica, part of the Eco-Federation of bioregions scattered across the globe. She lives in Ceantir (present-day Kintyre, near where I’ve been living for the past 22 years) and captains a sailing ship heading for London for a Climate Summit. When she gets there she meets up with her long-lost sister and ends up in the “Badlands”, a dormitory area where the city’s workforce lives. Find out what happens to her by downloading the PDF from Blurb bookstore (look up Search Blurb and type in the book’s and my name and you can download the PDF).

The book falls into a genre known as “solar punk” – like steam punk but featuring societies built around renewables rather than coal. I mix utopia with dystopia, and as well as bioregions it has lashings of permaculture. But more of this in future posts.

The fantastic futuristic illustrations are by Cathy Maxwell.

    Hi Ed
I just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed exploring this website. We are talking about bioregions on the PDC that I am convening and I have really valued the experience and expertise that is shared in these pages. Thank you!

    Hi Liz.

Glad you found the pages useful. If you have active apprentices, I would be happy to talk to them if they are interesting in using bioregions in any of their designs.
